Paolo Granata’s speech at The News Sensorium, international symposium, promoted by Panteion University, Athens April 20th-21th 2012.

The Department of Communication, Media and Culture of Panteion University and its postgraduate programme in Cultural Management, in association with the Coach House Institute (CHI) and its McLuhan Program in Culture & Technology (MPCT) at the Faculty of Information (University of Toronto), have organized a two-day symposium celebrating the joint centenaries of the Canadian founder of the Culture & Technology discipline, Marshall McLuhan, and his noted American co-worker and student, literary scholar Walter J. Ong.

The paper aims to explore the reconfiguration of the senses in terms of presence/present. The perception of time that best fits the current social scenario is to be connected with a new existential condition that is entirely focused and developed on the present, an “extended present”. This condition is both the cause and the effect of the continuous performances of presence that concur to define experience’s new sensorial and cognitive boundaries. Therefore, a new sensorium arises from a new sense of present/presence as a “return to magic”.
